From Making No. 11 / DAWN:

My parents hammered in the very Asian cultural norm that outdoor shoes are a no-no in the home. It's a great way to keep the house cleaner in general, and there's something extra relaxing about removing your footwear at the door.  I usually pad around in my socks or barefoot, but I also appreciate a good pair of slippers. These slippers - or "house shoes", as I like to think of them - are simple to make and the elasticated heel makes them comfortable to wear. Make sure to use an anti-slip fabric for the sole, or you might find yourself sliding across the room with your arms flailing!
